Best holiday albums2/22/2023 ![]() ![]() This is actually the later of two outstanding holiday albums by Marsalis, with a great backing band. Christmas Jazz Jam - Wynton Marsalis 2009 His What Child is This? (Greensleves) is note perfect, as is his bluesy take on the blue song I'll be Home for Christmas.ģ. One of the greatest pianists in history, in any idiom, in a mellow, emotional take on the holiday. But there are some really cool cuts on here all the way from the 20s to the 50s by a number of jazz bands and artists. The man could swing without a single musical note. This album would be worth it just for Louis Armstrong's spoken (not sung) version of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. So for those of you who like both jazz and "Christmas" music (a small subset of B'villians, I'm sure) here are my best 12 after all those years of collecting. I suppose most idiosyncratic collecting happens like that. Anyway, each Christmas season I just kept buying them when I saw them, and eventually I started searching them out. It was a reissue of Jingle Bell Jazz, a compilation album first released in 1962. I think I first noticed and bought an album of jazz Christmas music close to 40 years ago as I was leafing through the albums probably in a record store on the east side of or in downtown Milwaukee. According to me, of course, so take it FWIW. ![]()
